    Mister Whiskers

    The Big Fella

The book is dedicated to our baby boy

    / who died on February 15th, 2024.

    He had just turned 8.

It took us over a year to start being semi-functional again.

Even now we’re not fully engaged with life the way we were when he was around, with us: with the living.

I contemplated giving up the business and writing and being online, and everything really. I feel more grief with his death than any other loss I’ve had, and there’s been few. He’s just super precious to us. but we have Bubba to look after, and Jeeves – who became officially ours just after Whiskers passed.

We’d been feeding and socialising Jeeves since late 2021 when Bubs brought him home, sweet boy, knowing he was in need. In need of a family, of food and medical care. He was walking around with a broken canine, infected bite wounds all over his body, malnourished, frightened and confused.

Someone had abandoned him, an inside cat, onto the streets and he had no idea how to survive. Thankfully, he found us before it was too late.

His fur was short and brittle. He was always hungry and, even though he wanted physical attention, he was wary. Also, he was completely unsocialised with other cats, but we had Mister Whiskers.

Whiskers had this way with other animals. He was commanding and gentle, patient and generous, loving and wise, and, luckily for Bubba, the best Judo cat in the universe! When Jeeves would hiss in fear, uncertain if he’d be attacked, the boys just blinked and let him be. They ignored his spatial swatting and warning growls until eventually Jeeves realised he wasn’t under any threat. It didn’t hurt that Jeeves is also highly intelligent.

Even after Whiskers’ passing, Bubba has continued the training. Chasing after him at crazy hour, just enough to introduce him to the idea that play is different to attack. Jeeves isn’t quite there yet and I can’t help but wonder if Whiskers had stuck around a bit longer so Jeeves could actually witness what play looks like, he might be a bit further along now, but he’ll get there. I’m sure of it.

Once we have a better set up and we can get Bubs a friend, then everyone will be happier. Including, or perhaps especially, me. When I see Bubba looking out longingly waiting for his brother to come home, with no-one to wrestle him to the ground or chew on his neck or lick his ears or chase him up a tree, I get so sad.

Anyway, here’s another photo, in case you’re interested.

    hello

At the tail end of 2015 I moved, away from the Gold Coast, to focus on building my business and writing my book — the big book How To Be Medicine. Then my world collapsed and I couldn’t do any of it.

Opening my heart to what was, trusting it was happening for me, I let myself be lived by it. Slowly, piece by piece, the things I had designed my life around began to dissolve and I found myself somewhere completely different.

It wasn’t easy. It wasn’t painless, but it was beautiful. Always beautiful. Even then, as I was cracking the egg and behoven to it, I knew – this pain is sacred.

It has meaning, beyond being an alert to need and want. There’s a beckoning, a way in, the ultimate invitation to purity. It’s honest and demanding of my full attention, my whole awarenesses. And I love it, even though it hurts.

Some people wait, to feel full, to be through before they reveal themselves to the world. And that’s perfect, for them. I see them as perfect for their purpose and completely on track. I just know, for me, there is only this. I can’t wait for an end or beginning that never comes b/c I’m always right here, in the perfection of now.

Not a guru above the experience of now. Just aware, acutely, that that’s what’s really going on for me. Including my frustrations, my rage, my sorrow, my normal. Not ignoring them or in spite of them.

Also not making them a lesson, a dis-ease or attack. Whatever’s going on is happening for a reason, as part of the perfection of a whole that I can’t fathom. Not from here. Not as a thinking, breathing being of light and dark on soil on Earth in the world of give-and-take. But maybe I don’t have to. Understand, that is.

Maybe it’s enough for me to simply be who I am, where I am, as I am. Maybe it’s okay that it looks like I’m in pain and that I can’t get things done for people the way I used to. The way they’d like me to. And that what I’m up to now is different to what it used to look like. Different to what it’s expected to look like when someone has accepted the allowing of what is. Maybe.

  • Pre-publishing preparations

Much to my chagrin, there are worldly things to be done around the sale of the book, sigh. Not least of which requires me to finally decide upon the anchor (handle?) of my Patreon account as well as what to do with YT, and so on.

I am not, as you may have noticed, a great actor of social media-ing. There was an FB account registered, years ago, that fell off the radar from lack of use, and a Pinterest I think, no Instagram I believe, but possibly a Twitter which also faded into the background, withered and died more likely, when nobody bothered to do much more than initiate its existence.

I don’t even have a confirmed logo as yet, so all this media and publicity seems a bit premature, yes?

  • Print proofs have arrived!

As you can see, Jeeves is very excited to find out his mum is now officially an author — sweet baby.

“Thank You” to Rebekah Manser, my liaison @greenhillpublishing, for sending the print proofs — they arrived today!

  • Now you’ve read my book, maybe you’re ready for more.

In the final stages of editing and proofreading the book, I came across so many pieces I wanted to expand upon. Even the layout of having four parts to each chapter felt like it could do with a bit more explaining. Why not do it online!

On the flip side, the first version of ‘Offerings with Melanie’ (in the book) was spread over several pages. After reviewing it (over and over again b/c oh my god it took forever to get to a happy place with the writing), I just felt like it was too much.

Too much pressure on me to get things finished and have things ready. Too much for you to read through. Too many directions to send you all in. Too much going on in general. Then I had a conversation with my husband, who is brilliant! He suggested I create one link where I control the what and when of information that gets released. Told you – brilliant.

So, here it is. The one place.

Well, almost. I’m yet to submit the Marketing Questionnaire, and there’s the little matter of my images for the colour version I have them cooking up. Plus, I haven’t finished with my author proofread, but other than that, we’re good to go!
